Te Pararē presents the top stories of the week about or by tauira Māori across the motu.
Racism and prejudice keep Maori and Pacifica away from Research
We show that simply bolstering university enrolments and plugging more students into a broken pipeline will not solve the under-representation of Māori and Pacific peoples. Furthermore, a lack of representation is negatively affecting those Māori and Pacific postgraduate students already in STEM courses.
Politics students look into the differences between those on the Māori or General Roll.
Which Roll?—Ko Tēhea Rārangi Pōti? is a short survey by a group of mostly Māori politics students from Auckland Uni, who didn’t feel informed enough around the two electoral roll options for Māori. They’re putting in the work to research this kaupapa so more tauira Māori can feel informed and empowered with their voting power. Take the survey! It’s seriously quick and easy.
The first automotive course provided in te reo influenced by Kura kaupapa raukura
Ara is offering the first mechanics course to be taught in Māori, made possible by a kura kid who stood up for their native language. This has triggered the invention of a Māori vocabulary for automotive engineering, which is highkey amazing. If this is not a tohu for you reo speakers and kura kids out there to hit up your institutions to provide your courses in te reo, I don’t know what is!
Third-year Māori Otago Student on New Season of Heartbreak Island
Kaitaia-raised Manaaki Hoepo studies performing arts and sociology at Otago uni, and happens to star in the new season of Heartbreak Island. If romantic reality television is your kapu tī, then this is for you. Naturally, we’ll be backing our Māori LGBTQI+ boi Manaaki for the win!
